Fly to Beijing, the political, economic and cultural centre of the People’s Republic of China.
Upon arrival in Beijing, you will be met by your local guide holding a Tour East signboard in the arrivals area. Receive a warm welcome, and then transfer to your hotel for check-in. This evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with your fellow travelers. Stay three nights in Beijing.
Your first full day in China’s capital introduces you to the world’s largest city square, Tian’anmen Square, to the north of the Forbidden City, before entering this large Imperial Palace, once the seat of power for nearly 500 years during the Ming & Qing dynasties. The landscaped gardens, historic artifacts, and nearly 10,000 rooms captivate you in what is now called the Palace Museum. Enjoy a guided tour of the Forbidden City and some time to explore at leisure. Later, Beijing’s hutong neighbourhoods lined by traditional courtyard homes will be explored by pedicab before a walking tour to discover the lakeside neighbourhood of Houhai. This evening, enjoy a Peking duck dinner.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before heading to the Badaling Pass of the Great Wall. Gain insight into the Wall’s historic story & construction before a leisurely walk and climb up the wall where you will be awarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Return to the city for lunch and a guided tour of the Summer Palace, another of China’s many UNESCO World Heritage sites and which was once the summer retreat for the Empress Dowager Cixi. Surrounded by man-made Kunming Lake, the palace is home to various buildings, an ornate corridor and a fascinating history.
Early this morning, we’ll head to the Temple of Heaven to admire its elegance punctuated by the local Beijinger’s morning Tai Chi routine. Graceful Tai Chi movements with this tranquil Temple as a backdrop offers a peaceful look at an otherwise bustling modern metropolis.
Afterwards, drive to the airport for your flight to Xian.
On arrival in Xian, meet and head to the city for a visit to the City Wall. One of the few of China’s old city walls still standing, Xian’s city wall has a perimeter of 14km, with 12 meter high walls that are 12-14 meters wide at the top in which you may walk and marvel at the hum of activity playing out below.
Afterwards, head to the hotel for time to freshen up and then depart for dinner and a show.
This evening, you will enjoy a delectable multi-course meal accompanied by a colorful Tang Dynasty show boasting traditional attire, music, folklore and more from the prosperous Tang Dynasty period (CE 618 – 907).
After breakfast, head to the extraordinary site of the Terra Cotta Warriors. Not discovered until 1974 by local farmers, the Warriors are among the most fascinating discoveries of modern day. Tour the site with insightful commentary before enjoying a dumpling banquet lunch featuring dumplings of all shapes & sizes. After lunch, take a stroll through the lively streets nearby the Bell & Drum Towers and then head to one of Xian’s landmarks, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda for a walk and discovery of the energetic square nearby. Afterwards, take some time to marvel at the Tang Dynasty inspired cultural pedestrian streets offering further insight into the Tang period, of which Xian (or Chang’an) was capital.
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then transfer to the airport for your flight to the city scenic city of Guilin. Guilin is a land of beautiful karst formations located on the banks of the meandering Li River. On your arrival, meet at the airport for your transportation to the hotel for check-in and lunch. Later, visit the stunning Reed Flute Cave, a water-eroded cave of various stalactites, stone pillars and rock formations, and then see the city’s icon, the Elephant Trunk Hill. Later, this evening, take a leisurely stroll through the night market on your own.
Start the day with a scenic boat trip down the Li River offering 30 miles of mist shrouded mountains rising from the riverbanks. Guilin’s landscape has been recognized in countless poems and paintings in ancient Chinese history and is certainly a scenic highlight on any trip to China. Enjoy lunch on board before your cruise ends at the colorful market town of Yangshuo, where you will have some leisure time to explore the town and/or nearby rural countryside before returning to your hotel in Guilin.
This morning, fly to the city of Chongqing, where you will embark on your cruise along the Yangtze River. On arrival in Chongqing, time permitting, meet your guide for an orientation tour of the city. Highlights of your tour include the historic atmosphere of the Ciqikou ancient town, the Three Gorges Museum, and the panda exhibit at the Chongqing Zoo.
After dinner, you will board the river boat for your 3 night cruise through beautiful natural scenery, cultural sights, and the majestic Three Gorges.
Enjoy your breakfast & lunch on board and some time to relax before your afternoon shore excursion to Shibaozhai, a red hillside temple contrasting nicely with the lush foliage and rocky face of the hill. In addition, an optional excursion, on own account, will be offered to the Fengdu ‘Ghost City’.
We arrive at Badong and disembark for the Shennong Stream excursion and see hanging coffins, natural scenery and hear Tuja Songs. Enter Wu Gorge, known for its quiet beauty, forest-covered mountains and cliffs. Then sail through Qutang Gorge, the shortest, narrowest and most dramatic of all the gorges. An optional excursion will be offered, on own account, to the White Emperor City.
Visit the Three Gorges Dam Site then pass through the Three Gorges Dam 5-stage Shiplocks, the largest hydroelectric project in the world. You will disembark around noon and then transfer to the airport for your flight to Shanghai. On arrival, meet and transfer to the town of Suzhou, a town bursting at its edges with modernity while holding on to an era of historic grandeur.
This morning, take a stroll through the typical Qing Dynasty-style Lingering Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards, discover Pingjiang Road, an ancient street with shops, cafes, teahouses, and an artsy feel. Later, take a boat ride on the Grand Canal for a glimpse of the old town from the water. Take some time to stroll along the historic and charming Shantang Street close to the canal where daily life plays out beautifully. Lanterns sway, commerce abounds, and a truly picturesque elegance welcomes your curiosity as you experience Suzhou’s old town.
During your tour, stop at the Silk Factory and learn about the city’s history of silk production accompanied by silk demonstrations. After dinner, you will have the evening at your leisure.
In the morning, depart for Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the National Park that gave inspiration for some of the scenes in the movie Avatar (approx. 5 hours driving). The Yellow Mountains are a picturesque natural landscape where walks, scenery and a colorful sunset offer a different experience in China. Upon your arrival, check-in for your two night stay.
In the morning take a cable car up to the summit of Huangshan. Visit the North Sea scenic area, Lion Peak, Pentip Peak Shi Xin Peak, and other key sites. Watch the sunset from the mountain, and in the late afternoon take a cable car down and return to the hotel for the evening at your leisure. Keep in mind that you will be walking a lot this day on uneven terrain and up & down stairs.
Enjoy the morning to explore the old town of Tunxi. After lunch, travel to Hangzhou (approx. 2.5-3 hours driving) and check-in for your two night stay.
Take a tour to the Dragon Well Tea Plantation, considered to be among China’s best. Learn of tea culture in China as well as the benefits of Dragon Well Tea (Longjing Tea) in beautiful surroundings of sprawling terraces of tea leaves. Head to the mausoleum of General Yue Fei, famous for wars with the Jin & Song Dynasties, and who is considered a national hero. The tomb covers an area of around four acres, and is located near West Lake.
Afterwards, take a cruise on West Lake, and then visit the Ling Yin Temple (Temple of Soul’s Retreat). One of the most famous Buddhist temples in all of China, Ling Yin Temple is also the earliest temple in Hangzhou. Located within a beautiful environment, the temple is one of the largest in the Wulin Mountain range. Also today, take a walk in Huagang Park, and visit the old street of Qinghefang where you can admire the cultural and historical character of Hangzhou.
This morning, meet your guide and head to Shanghai. Visit the Chenghuangmiao Bazaar and then explore the colonial Bund waterfront lining the Huangpu River with unimpeded views of the modern Pudong Skyline. Once home to trading houses & financial institutions, the buildings along the Bund are of European style. Afterwards, check-in to your hotel and have the evening at your leisure.
Today’s tour highlights the city’s key attractions, trendy neighbourhoods, and a historic waterfront. Visit the Shanghai Museum, a large museum containing ancient Chinese art, and the historic & trendy Tian Zi Fang enclave. In the afternoon, take a stroll around the Xintiandi neighbhourhood, a bar, restaurant, café & entertainment district. Among the main features of the district are the mid 19th century Shikumen, or Stone Gate, buildings flanking narrow alleys and streets. Also notable, the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China was held in the area. Later, have some time to discover pedestrian-friendly Nanjing Road where shopping, neon lights, and a lively atmosphere abound
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and the morning at your leisure. Checkout at 12 noon. At the appointed time, you will be met and then transferred to the airport for your departure flight.
