Magical Kenya Tours

On the shores of the Indian Ocean and in the shadows of Mt. Kenya, Kenya is a treasure trove of wildlife, dramatic geography and a diverse people. She is the Africa you’ve always envisioned. The very thought of visiting one of Kenya’s great national parks and coming face-to-face with one of the Big Five or other great creatures that patrol the vast, open landscape excites even the most seasoned traveller. For a country of its size, Kenya packs a lot in: mountains and deserts, colourful tribal culture, beaches and coral reefs, and some of Africa’s best wildlife attractions. The fact is Kenya is Africa in microcosm – a one stop thrill ride. All that excitement comes to life on a safari-tour that combines game drives with stays at iconic lodges in places like the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, Samburu and Amboseli. Along the way, you’ll meet Maasai tribesmen who will excite you with their dances and thrill you with their culture and food. Kenyans represent a wide cross-section of everything that is contemporary Africa - everyday life brings together traditional tribes and urban families; ancient customs and modern sensibilities.

TOP NATIONAL PARKS IN KENYA:

Maasai Mara Nature Reserve

Quite possibly the greatest wildlife destination the world over, the Maasai Mara is home to the Big Five and one of the most remarkable shows on earth – the annual migration. Go from mid-June to October where the zebra, wildebeest and more flood the grasslands while lions and other predators stalk their pray and go on the hunt. Located in Southwestern Kenya, the heartland of the Maasai, this National Reserve comprises 200 square miles of open rolling plains home to Africa’s greatest collection of wildlife.

Amboseli National Park

In the shadows of Africa’s largest mountain, Amboseli is known as the home of the elephants. Here you’ll find large elephant herds roaming the plains against the majestic snow-capped backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro creating some of Africa’s most picturesque settings. See a wide range of mammals and birds, as well as Maasai communities.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Located in the heart of the Rift Valley, this compact park is named after the shallow alkaline lake which hosts one of the greatest bird spectacles in the world where millions of flamingoes laze in the low tide creating the lake’s shimmering pink glow. Rhinos, lions, leopards, giraffes, waterfalls, and plenty more, make this one of Kenya’s most sought after safari destinations.

Samburu National Reserve

Set up in the hot & arid fringes around the richest stretch of the Ewaso Nyiro River, Samburu National Reserve has a permanent water supply and forest shade ensuring continued patronage by the reserve’s wildlife. The most popular game species commonly found here are the Reticulated Giraffe, lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, hippos, and buffalo.

Tsavo National Park

A vast arid region, this is Kenya’s largest protected wildlife stronghold. Combining both Tsavo East & Tsavo West, this park is also the oldest in Kenya. Home to the Big Five and the highly endangered rhinos, Tsavo is rich in wilderness and unique in geography.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

Climate

Kenya is divided by the Equator and enjoys a tropical climate. It is hot and humid at the coast, temperate inland and very dry in the north and northeastern parts of the country. The hottest period is in February and March and the coldest in July and August. The long rains occur from April to June and short rains from October to December. Rainfall is sometimes heavy and tends to fall in the afternoon and evenings. Conditions in East Africa are often ideal, although the coast can be humid and there are hot, desert conditions at arid sites like Olorgesaillie and around Lake Turkana. But most of your destinations in Kenya boast temperatures between 21-32 degrees celsius by day, and rarely below 12 degrees celsius at night. Even during the short rains, the humidity is low for much of the day, and the skies clear.

Entry Regulations

Canadian & U.S. citizens traveling to Kenya require a visa to enter the country. Tourist visas can be obtained at a Kenyan embassy abroad, or upon arrival at the airport in Nairobi for USD$50. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the expected date of your departure from Kenya. Yellow Fever Vaccination cards are not mandatory, but recommended. Please check before departure as the status of this requirement changes frequently.

Currency

The official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES).

Electricity

The current used in Kenya is 240AC, 50HZ. This system may differ from the one you use at home. We suggest purchasing an adapter to take with you. Most lodges and camps on safari are situated in remote areas and have to generate their own electricity.

Language

The official languages in Kenya are Kiswahili and English. English is widely spoken in lodges, camps and the larger towns.

Health Regulations

Yellow Fever Vaccinations are recommended for visitors going to Kenya and may be required at the time of your travel if you are arriving from an endemic country. At the time of printing it is required for travel to Mafia Island. After immunization, an International Certificate of Vaccination is issued.

Cuisine

Kenya’s cuisine is a mix of various influences and is likely to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters. Big & small restaurants, as well as lodges, serve African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and North American dishes often with a local spin. Fine dining is available, but primarily in Nairobi, often a part of international hotels. Arabic & Indian influences are prevalent and easy to spot with items such as chapatti and biryani rice being widely available.
