Among the most sought after destinations in Myanmar, or Asia for that matter, Bagan is Myanmar’s answer to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Located on the banks of the Ayerawaddy River, the collection of Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas, many in ruins, is the largest in the world. The sunset in Bagan is arguably unmatched. Take a bicycle around the site, it’s your best chance to truly immerse yourself.
Famed by the native Intha’s and their leg rowing technique, Inle Lake is likely your favorite place in Myanmar. With a mosaic of ethnic groups in the area, it is a colorful place, with some wonderfully vibrant markets. Stay in bungalows over the water, take treks to nearby villages, see handicraft villages, and explore the temples at Indein.
There are a lot of remarkable sunset experiences to be had in Myanmar, and it’s hard to say which is best, but the golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon at sunset is a sight to be seen.
Located in Kyaiktyo, it takes some effort to get there along with a reasonable hike up a mountain, but the sight of a giant golden boulder balancing on the edge of a mountain along with views over the valley below don’t disappoint.
Myanmar’s best option for a beach stay, Ngapali is nothing like its neighbours and is often so quiet you feel like you’ve come across something that remains for the most part a hidden gem. More and more hotels are opening up, and things are-a-changing, but Ngapali stills feels far removed from the crowds.
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
Myanmar has three seasons, the very hot summer from March to May, the wet season from June to September, and the cool, dry winter from October to February, with evenings dropping to around 15°C. Typhoons occasionally occur in Myanmar between April and October. Coastal areas are usually much more humid, but slightly cooler overall. Hotels on the west coast resort area of Ngapali Beach are typically closed from May to September due to heavy rain.
Canadian & U.S. citizens traveling to Myanmar require a visa to enter the country. Tourist visas are to be obtained prior to travel at a Myanmar diplomatic mission or through the e-visa online portal at http://evisa.moip.gov.mm/.
