Myanmar Tours - The Golden Land

The golden gem in Southeast Asia’s crown, Myanmar is as close as you’ll get to time untouched in the ever growing and changing Far East. Clichés aside, in Myanmar, formerly Burma, you immerse yourself in an ancient culture in an oft tumultuous land as you travel along the Ayerawaddy River and among the surreal temple-scape of Bagan, or while meeting the native Intha’s in Inle Lake or looking out over Mandalay from Mandalay Hill. Meet the people and experience the culture as you make your way through the key sites, opt to hike on rural paths, cycle by water buffalos plowing fields, or relax on the beaches of Ngapali. Sandy rural villages with traditional dress and customs far removed from modern life to the colorfully bustling marketplaces and handicraft workshops, Myanmar is the Golden Land.

TOP EXPERIENCES IN MYANMAR:

Bagan

Among the most sought after destinations in Myanmar, or Asia for that matter, Bagan is Myanmar’s answer to Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Located on the banks of the Ayerawaddy River, the collection of Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas, many in ruins, is the largest in the world. The sunset in Bagan is arguably unmatched. Take a bicycle around the site, it’s your best chance to truly immerse yourself.

Inle Lake

Famed by the native Intha’s and their leg rowing technique, Inle Lake is likely your favorite place in Myanmar. With a mosaic of ethnic groups in the area, it is a colorful place, with some wonderfully vibrant markets. Stay in bungalows over the water, take treks to nearby villages, see handicraft villages, and explore the temples at Indein.

Yangon's Shwedagon Pagoda at Sunset

There are a lot of remarkable sunset experiences to be had in Myanmar, and it’s hard to say which is best, but the golden Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon at sunset is a sight to be seen.

The Golden Rock

Located in Kyaiktyo, it takes some effort to get there along with a reasonable hike up a mountain, but the sight of a giant golden boulder balancing on the edge of a mountain along with views over the valley below don’t disappoint.

Ngapali Beach

Myanmar’s best option for a beach stay, Ngapali is nothing like its neighbours and is often so quiet you feel like you’ve come across something that remains for the most part a hidden gem. More and more hotels are opening up, and things are-a-changing, but Ngapali stills feels far removed from the crowds.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

Climate

Myanmar has three seasons, the very hot summer from March to May, the wet season from June to September, and the cool, dry winter from October to February, with evenings dropping to around 15°C. Typhoons occasionally occur in Myanmar between April and October. Coastal areas are usually much more humid, but slightly cooler overall. Hotels on the west coast resort area of Ngapali Beach are typically closed from May to September due to heavy rain.

Entry Regulations

Canadian & U.S. citizens traveling to Myanmar require a visa to enter the country. Tourist visas are to be obtained prior to travel at a Myanmar diplomatic mission or through the e-visa online portal at http://evisa.moip.gov.mm/.

Currency

The official currency is the Kyat (MMK). US dollars are widely accepted.

Electricity

The current used in Myanmar is 230AC / 50HZ. This system may differ from the one you use at home. We suggest purchasing an adapter to take with you.

Language

The official language is Burmese. English is widely spoken in tourist facilities.

Health Regulations

Vaccination certificates are not required unless coming from an infected area. For all health requirements and recommendations, travellers should check with their health authority for the most up to date information.

Shopping

Handicrafts are the most prevalent of items for purchase in Myanmar, and are a good way to ensure your kyat/dollars go to the local people. Myanmar is particularly known for its lacquer ware, which is made into bowls, cups, vases, tables and various items, as well as painted parasols, marionettes, weaved tapestries, silverware, and precious stones. The markets around Inle Lake and the Bogyoke Aung San Market in Yangon are choice shopping stops.

Cuisine

Burmese cuisine owes its diversity to the various ethnic minorities, and influences from Chinese, Indian and Thai cuisine. Fish products, including fish sauce, are most common. There are few quality international restaurants outside of international hotels, but tasty local cuisine can be found through food stalls and local Myanmar restaurants. Some suggestions include the unofficial dish of Myanmar, Mohinga (rice noodle soup), Burmese curry, and the Shan-style noodles.
