TOP EXPERIENCES IN TAIWAN:

Taroko National Park

Arguably Taiwan’s most popular tourist attraction, perhaps due to its close proximity to Taipei but nevertheless the scenery is indeed impressive. Taroko is a region of mountains, gorges, valleys, peaks, ravines, flora and fauna. Admire the marble-walled canyons, walk or hike the trails, see the Eternal Spring Shrine situated atop a waterfall, and take in the sites as you experience a slice of Taiwan’s natural side.

Sun Moon Lake

Popular indeed, and rightfully so. This fresh water lake, Taiwan’s largest, is located in a scenic mountainous area in the centre of the island making it a convenient stop as you explore Taiwan’s most notable attractions and sites. Lakeside hotels, aboriginal culture, beautiful landscapes, and more.

Taipei

Taiwan’s hub and most enthralling city, Taipei offers visitors everything from a world class museum to the Taipei 101 building, ancient temples, bustling markets, and culinary indulgences aplenty. Take some time to see the sites and then dive deeper to see even more. Each corner, alley, street, and market bring to life one of Asia’s best kept secrets.

Tainan City

The oldest city in Taiwan and where traditional culture still abounds. Many would argue that this is the most enjoyable city to explore in the country with airy cafes, canal-side homes, artisans at work, narrow alleys where lanterns sway and shops burst with goods, ancient temples, and modernity on the move. Seeing Tainan is seeing urban Taiwan at its best.

Alishan Scenic Area

The mountains of Ali are the country’s most impressive and dramatic. With steep rock faces, jagged peaks and human development all wrapped up into one, Alishan is an impressive region to explore. There is an old forest railway that was built by the Japanese in the early 1900’s that now marks one of the area’s most notable recreational activities, along with beautiful cliffside walks, sunrise views, mist shrouded scenery and much more.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

Climate

Taiwan is typically warm year round with hot summers and mild winters, however typhoon season is the main consideration when planning your trip. Generally speaking, the Fall, Winter and Spring months from about October through April offer dry and warm weather across the island. The summer months starting from about mid-May through to September see an increase in rainfall. Typhoon season is generally considered to be from June/July through to September.

Entry Regulations

Canadian & USA citizens do not require a tourist visa for stays up to 90 days. Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the expected date of your departure from Taiwan. Entry requirements are subject to change, please check with government authority for most up to date requirements.

Currency

The official currency is the New Taiwan Dollar (TWD or NT$).

Electricity

The current used in Taiwan is 110AC / 60HZ, same as Canada and US. As a precaution, we suggest purchasing an adapter to take with you or to purchase one locally if needed.

Language

The official language of Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese.

Health Regulations

Vaccination certificates are not required unless coming from an infected area. For all health requirements and recommendations, travellers should check with their health authority for the most up to date information.

Cuisine

To say that food choice in Taiwan is plentiful would be a massive understatement. The Taiwanese love to eat and the options are indeed endless. From night markets and street stalls to upmarket restaurants and cafes to international dining and fast food, there is really something for everyone and at every price range to boot. Taiwanese have a love affair with local cuisine and it becomes increasingly clear as you meander about city streets taking in the smells and sounds, and the bustle around dining establishments. Locals love to eat out, so you are in good company. Local cuisine is generally a melting pot of Chinese and Japanese, with rice or noodles as the staple. Combinations of rice/noodles with meat, vegetables, seafood, and everything in between are most common along with soups, hotpots, breads, dumplings, fruit, desserts, and so on. Taiwanese beef noodles would arguably be the country’s most popular dish, but there is a considerably long list of contenders. Try the stinky tofu, popular yes, enjoyable? You decide.

Shopping

Taiwan is considered to be one of the most popular countries in Asia for shopping. With shopping malls to markets to boutiques, Taiwan boasts a high profile in terms of commerce for both locals and travelers. The Shilin Night Market is the most popular and is deserving of a stroll even if not shopping, but the modern shopping malls and underground shopping bazaars are sure to satisfy even the most discerning of shoppers. Popular items include jade, tea, curios, cosmetics, and mini-lanterns.
