One of the reasons we all want to visit Egypt, both the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx will not disappoint.
The lifeblood of Egypt, the Nile River boasts temples, tombs, cities and villages along her banks, and seeing it all from the comfort of your own cabin is among the most relaxing and stimulating experiences in Egypt. The Karnak & Luxor Temples, the Valley of the Kings, and the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut are among the most notable.
The temples of Abu Simbel in Nubia, Southern Egypt, are two massive rock-cut temples on the banks of Lake Nasser which rival any of the sites you will have seen in Cairo or along the Nile.
Head out of the city and away from the Nile and into the desert to see desert communities, mud-brick villages, and a traditional lifestyle unchanged since the dawn of time.
The Egyptian bazaar in Cairo is a maze of streets leading in all directions with store fronts and stalls offering everything from the exotic to familiar. Expect to get lost, it’s encouraged.
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
The climate of Egypt is easy, it’s either hot or dry, with the exception of December to February which can be somewhat cool in the north. You will find in winter that the daytime weather contrasts sharply from the night where it can be as low as 8 °C, for example, in Cairo, or even colder in the desert. The best time to visit most sites in Egypt is from October to May, but ideal from February to April and from October to November. During the best times of year, it is hot, but not too hot to be enjoyable. The skies and sea are typically a perfect blue. The Khamsin winds can bring dust storms in March/April, making visibility limited, but this is typically only for a few days. The summer months can be scorching from 30-40+ °C depending on where you visit.
Egyptian cuisine combines many of the best traditions of Middle Eastern cooking. There are both large hotel restaurants and smaller specialty restaurants throughout the main towns. Portions are often large and unexpected extras occasionally end up on your plate, from freshly baked breads and dips to an after-meal tea. From meat-eaters to vegetarians and vegans, Egypt caters to all. Egyptian cuisine is typically simple and tasty, relying on vegetables, herbs, lamb and chicken. Some notable dishes include Taameya (falafel), Tahina salad, Koshari, Dawood Basha, and Ful Medammes.
