Jordan Tours: Hidden Treasures

Home to one of the most remarkable world wonders and an ancient civilization, Jordan is more than it seems. A rock-cut city so extraordinary the world looks on in awe, a sea so full of minerals that you effortlessly stay afloat, and Roman ruins so impressive they still stand today. The site of Jesus’ baptism, desert camps in the heart of Lawrence of Arabia lore, nature reserves, beaches, and some of the most hospitable people on earth, Jordan is an unforgettable treasure on the world’s tourism map. Your first look at the Treasury in Petra as you walk through the narrow gorge is what you’ve been waiting for, but it’s also the caves, amphitheatres and other ruins that put it all in perspective. This truly is a wonder of the world. The medicinal waters of the Dead Sea, a camel ride in the desert, the bustling center of Amman, and a walk along the cardo in ancient Jerash add a heady spice to the contrasts that are Jordan. A kingdom it is, Jordan welcomes with open arms.

TOP EXPERIENCES IN JORDAN:

Petra

To many, Petra is the reason to visit Jordan, and understandably so. Petra is more than just the ‘Treasury’, the building that is featured in so many ‘best of’ photography lists, it’s the atmosphere among the rugged canyons and mountains in the Valley of Wadi Mousa where ruins of an ancient ‘lost city’ remain. A walk through the Siq, the narrow gorge leading into the ancient city, is your introduction to the Treasury, but amphitheatres, caves, tombs, a colonnade street, church ruins, and more unfold gradually over a wide expanse. The rock-cut sandstone city of the Nabateans became a major caravan crossroads for incense, silks, spices and more between Arabia, Egypt & Syria-Phoenicia, and is now a Wonder of the World.

Wadi Rum

Located in south Jordan, about 60km from Aqaba on the Red Sea Coast, Wadi Rum is a dramatic desert wilderness, most well known as the location where the British Officer, T.E. Lawerence (Lawrence of Arabia) passed through during the early 20th century Arab Revolt. A land of timeless beauty inhabited by Bedouins, a visit to Wadi Rum with a stay in a Desert Camp is one of the most memorable in all of Jordan.

Float in the Dead Sea

Sharing part of the Dead Sea with Israel, Jordan’s side seems to be much more relaxed and suited for a calm getaway. Located 427 meters below sea level, this sea-of-salt is actually a lake, one of the saltiest in the world, where animals cannot thrive and where staying afloat is a favorite pastime. Known as a health resort since Herod the Great, the Dead Sea remains a favorite for some me-time with spa, massage, and other wellness facilities at the various resorts on its shores.

Roman Splendour in Jerash

The Roman ruins of Jerash, a short drive from Amman, are among the most intact of any Roman provincial towns. Comprising of soaring hilltop temples, colonnaded streets, public squares and plazas, giant theatres, fountains, city walls, towers, gates and more, Jerash’s architecture is impressive in scale and antiquity. Hidden for centuries in sand before being excavated and restored over the past 70 years, Jerash remains one of the most fascinating sites in all of Jordan.

Aqaba, a Red Sea Paradise

The southern Red Sea resort in Aqaba is your best choice for a relaxing end to a tour of Jordan’s hidden treasures. Day trips to Wadi Rum are easy, water sports plentiful, boat trips memorable, shopping at ease and friendly people make Aqaba a must if looking to round out a complete Jordan experience.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

Climate

Jordan is a small country, but the climate varies greatly. Most of Jordan has a desert climate with little or no rainfall. The best time to visit is March to May and September to November, when daytime temperatures are not at their extremes. Winter can be cool, particularly in Amman, where it can snow, and in the desert where it can be bitterly cold at night. Summer months are oppressive with temperatures well above 30°C. Wadi Rum, in the desert, has a dry heat making it more tolerable. Aqaba on the Red Sea coast is a year round destination.

Entry Regulations

Canadian & U.S. citizens traveling to Jordan require a visa to enter the country. Tourist visas can be obtained at a Jordanian embassy abroad, or upon arrival at ports of entry into Jordan for 40 Jordanian Dinars (approx. USD $54). Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the expected date of your departure from Jordan.

Currency

The official currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD).

Electricity

The current used in Jordan is 220/240AC, 50HZ. This system may differ from the one you use at home. We suggest purchasing an adapter to take with you.

Language

The official language in Jordan is Arabic. English is widely spoken in city centers and tourist facilities.

Health Regulations

Vaccination certificates are not required unless coming from an infected area. For all health requirements and recommendations, travellers should check with their health authority for the most up to date information.

Shopping

Every town in Jordan has a Souk (market). These Souks sell handmade jewellery, carvings, food, and other local specialties. Bargaining is normal and often expected. Common items of purchase in Jordan include carpets, ceramics, Arab Kefiyas (headscarves), mosaics, and Dead Sea wellness products.

Cuisine

Jordanian cuisine is an eclectic mix of Middle Eastern and traditional Jordanian cooking. Adding fresh fruit and dairy to classic Middle Eastern cuisines gives Jordanian cuisine a special flavour that so many relish. Some notable dishes include the national dish, Mansaf, and falafel, Zarb Bedouin BBQ, Kofta, and the various Mezze plates.
